Gidion Mashiane, a 2017 Siyandisa Foundation Scholarship recipient who studies actuarial science at the University of Cape Town, was recently nominated to represent UCT at the “Rethinking Economics for Africa Festival 2019”.
The festival, which took place at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, is a platform for debate and discussion aiming to shape diverse educational engagements on economics across the African continent. While the festival is open to the general public, the main participants consist of students, academics and activists.
“It was a huge honour to be nominated to represent the UCT chapter at the festival”, said Mashiane, who went on to share how passionate he is about economics. He wishes to continue with it all the way to postgraduate level. “I have also learnt how being involved in engaging debates such as this can help broaden my mind to not only perform well academically, but to also see the world and our continent in a bigger context”, he concluded.
